Effects of Static Stretching on the Musculoskeletal Discomfort, Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand, and Fatigue of Operating Room Nurse

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching on the musculoskeletal discomfort, disability of arm, shoulder and hand, and fatigue of operating room nurses.

Methods: This study employed experiment group contained 23 operating room nurses from the hospital that participated
in an intervention program, the control group had 23 that did not participate in one. The experiment group did static stretching in 32 movements for the upper body while watching the video created by the investigator for four weeks from June 9 to July 6, 2015 before the transfer in the operating room with a ten-minute session five times a week.

Results: The static stretching therapy had effects on the reduction of musculoskeletal discomfort (t=-2.44, p=.019), disability of arm, shoulder and hand (F=4.41, p=.042), and fatigue (t=-3.02, p=.004) among operating room nurse.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that using static stretching on the operating room nurse is effective in reducing the levels of musculoskeletal discomfort, disability of arm, shoulder and hand, and fatigue.
